This form of name developed from Germanic names on -mer , such as inguiomer , chlodomer and others. A Cheitumar was first mentioned in the 6th century as the leader of the Slavic carantans . The name was probably of Germanic origin. In the 7th century it was called Audomar , in the 10th century names like Thankmar , Thietmar appeared . In Scandinavia names like Waldemar , Ingmar , Dagmar have been mentioned since the 11th century .

In the Slavic-speaking area names in -mir (Vladimir) developed since the 9th century.

-mar is derived from Gothic mēr famous , Old High German mari . The preceding word components are of Germanic origin such as Ing- from Yngvi or Þiud- ( Thiud- ) from Þhiuda .
