The name occurs in the following cultures:

  • as an old high German first name. From Isan (iron) and mari (known, famous, respected). Possible meanings are "blacksmith", "iron merchant" (see the meaning of similar surnames) or "swordtail".
  • as a Jewish adaptation of the Hebrew name Itamar ; Old Testament "son of Aaron" (older brother of Moses); Management role in the construction of the first temple in Jerusalem. The first name of some German or German-born Jews.
  • as a neo-Muslim name in Bosnia from Is- for Ismet (Turkish for “purity” or “honesty”) and -mar for Marija . Originated in communist times.
