Adelbert Matthaei

Adelbert Matthaei (born July 4, 1859 in Gersdorf (Markersdorf) , Upper Lusatia , † January 21, 1924 in Sopot ) was a German art historian. In 1921 he was President of the People's Day of the Free City of Danzig .

Life

Matthaei, son of a pastor, attended the Augustum-Annen-Gymnasium in Görlitz and the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster in Berlin. He studied history at the Philipps University of Marburg and the Friedrichs University of Halle . In 1879 he became a member of the Corps Teutonia Marburg and the Corps Guestphalia Halle . In 1881 he was named Dr. phil. PhD. He entered the Prussian archival career, but switched to teaching because of the poor career prospects. In February 1886 he passed the philological state examination at the Hessian Ludwig University . In 1889 he was employed as a teacher for ancient languages ​​at the Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Giessen . With his artistic talent he also taught as a drawing teacher. In Giessen he worked on his habilitation thesis on the architecture of the Cistercians in Germany and France. The Christian Albrechts University in Kiel appointed him for the winter semester 1893/94 as an academic drawing teacher and associate professor for art history. He sat on the board of trustees of the Thaulow Museum and played a major role in the purchase of the Landkirchen retable . In 1904 he moved to the newly founded Technical University of Danzig . For the three academic years 1909–1912 he was elected rector of the TH Danzig. As a member of the German National People's Party (DNVP), he was elected to the Danzig People's Day in 1920. In 1921 he was its president. He died in office at the age of 64. Matthaeis son Rupprecht Matthaei was from 1935-1945 in Erlangen o. Professor of Physiology. Johannes Heinrich Matthaei , the discoverer of the genetic code , is his grandson.
