The Personidae are a family of mostly small marine snails from the tropical seas. They are placed in the superfamily Cassoidea of the Caenogastropoda .

features

The casings are right-handed and unevenly trochospirally rolled up. This uneven curling is also known as distortion (origin of the name of the genus Distorsio ). The mouth is elongated with folded edges. The opening can be narrowed by folds and "teeth" (protrusions). The lower end is drawn into a siphon channel. The cases are usually heavily ornamented. The adult size ranges from about 4 cm to about 7 cm. The housing opening is closed by an operculum . The foot is relatively small, as is the propodium . The head has no snout. There are no large salivary glands, such as those used by closely related Triton snails to paralyze their prey. As far as is known, the family is segregated. The ontogenetic development is a plankton-eating Veliger larva that relatively a long time in the plankton is staying. Findings of Veliger larvae in plankton far from the coast lead to the conclusion that they can cover great distances in the sea.

Way of life

Little is known about the way of life of the Personiden. They mainly live in shallow water and, as an exception, go up to 600 m. Remnants of annelids were found in the stomach contents of two Personiden species .

Systematics

The Personidae family is not (yet) divided into subfamilies:
