Pescanova SA is a Spanish fishing group based on the Galician Atlantic coast in the municipality of Chapela-Redondela ( province of Pontevedra ), just north of Vigo , the world's most important fishing port, which is the group’s central base of operations.

With a turnover of around 1 billion euros and almost 10,000 employees (including around 3,500 in Spain), around 100 ships and 150,000 tons of fishery products produced annually, the company is the largest fishing company in Europe and is one of the five largest companies in the industry in the world and one of the most important food company in Spain.

Company headquarters in Chapela-Redondela

Pescanova was founded in Vigo in 1960 by José Fernández López (after advice from Valentín Paz-Andrade, among others ) and was equipped with the most modern equipment from the beginning, especially factory ships that were still unusual at the time . Since 1980 it has been under the direction of his son Manuel Fernández de Sousa-Faro. The company, which has been listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange since 1985, is active in around 20 countries through numerous subsidiaries, with processing facilities in Spain, Portugal , Namibia , Nicaragua , Honduras , Chile (salmon), Ecuador (shrimp) and other countries.

On April 15, 2013 Pescanova had to file for bankruptcy after financial problems had existed for some time and recently irregularities in the accounting (higher debts than shown in the books) were uncovered. In addition, the company boss admitted significant stock sales that had not been reported to the stock exchange regulator.

In addition to the founding family, the company's larger investors include the Spanish brewery group Damm ( Estrella Damm ) and the Luxembourg private equity fund Luxempart.
