Pesti Hírlap
Pesti Hírlap ( Hungarian for Pest Journal ) was the name of several independent Hungarian political newspapers .
1841-1849
The paper appeared for the first time during the reforms of 1841 and lasted until the end of the Hungarian struggle for freedom of 1849. Published by Lajos Kossuth , Pesti Hírlap was the most important organ for opposition opponents such as Ferenc Deák , István Széchenyi and József Eötvös . In 1844 the Viennese government relieved Kossuth of his office.
Other editors were Antal Csengery and László Szalay .
1878-1944
The paper was published for the second time from 1878 to 1944 under the owner and editor-in-chief Károly Légrády . In the years of the First World War, the moderately conservative paper reached a circulation of 500,000. As a new feature, the format had been reduced a little and the newspaper had a rubric system.
The editors were Jenö Benda , Lajos Berecz , Nándor Borostyáni , József Csukássy , Géza Kenedy , Imre Légrády , Ottó Légrády , Gusztáv Lenkey , József Schmittely and Emil Nagy .
1992-1994
The paper was published for the third time from 1992 to 1994. At that time it was considered the mouthpiece of the right-wing conservative critics of József Antall's government . At the time, the daily was the only independent newspaper that did not belong to any corporation or political party. The owner and editor-in-chief was the former employee of Népszabadság , András Bencsik . After the election victory of the post-communists in 1994, the paper was banned through informal channels. Some employees co-founded the new right-wing radical weekly newspaper Magyar Demokrata (“The Democratic”) by András Bencsik. Demokrata is subject to constant criticism for its right-wing extremist articles .
