Claudia Biene (born December 17, 1973 in Münster ) is a German disabled athlete in athletics .

Life

Claudia Biene was born in Münster , then moved to Warendorf with her parents at the age of nine . As a teenager she was already enthusiastic about sports and very successful as a track and field athlete. At the age of 14, she was diagnosed with a bone tumor in her left thigh that was positioned in such a way that reverse plastic surgery was possible. The knee with the tumor is removed and the lower part of the leg is turned by 180 ° and reattached. This avoids phantom pain by preserving the blood vessels and allows the leg to be more usable, which now uses the foot as a knee joint. After a year of chemotherapy , she beat cancer and continued her academic career. After graduating from high school in 1993, she first studied in Münster and later began training as a speech therapist in Leipzig , which she completed in 2001. Since then, Biene, who enjoys playing music in her free time, has been working as a speech therapist in Berlin . In 2003 she began studying psychology in Berlin , followed by a distance learning course in business administration in 2005 .

Career

In summer 2002 Claudia Biene became aware of Michaela Daamen, who was very successful at the Paralympics 2000 in Sydney. Her example motivated her to try again as a track and field athlete. After several conversations with coaches and some tests, she decided to pursue a career as a disabled athlete at the Paralympic Sports Club in Berlin. She concentrated on the disciplines of discus and javelin throw as well as long jump . In her first major competition, the International German Championships in 2003, she won the discus competition and took fourth place in both long jump and javelin throw. In addition, she reached fourth place in the long jump at the European championships.

In 2004, Biene repeated her success in discus throwing at the International German Championships - she set a new world record with 28.32 m. At the 2004 Paralympics in Athens she suffered from bad luck with an injury: She had to cancel the long jump competition and was also in pain when throwing a javelin and discus. Nevertheless, she won the silver medal in the discus with 27.11 m. At the state championships in Berlin-Brandenburg she succeeded in re-qualifying for the European championships in discus and javelin throw.

For winning the silver medal at the Paralympic Games in 2004, she received the silver laurel leaf from Federal President Horst Köhler on March 16, 2005.

At the Paralympics in Beijing in 2008 , she finished seventh in the javelin throw with 29.07 m and on the same day in eighth place in the long jump with 2.78 m.
