The Petalichthyida (Petalichthyformes) are a group of the extinct Placodermi , fish-like, armored vertebrates from the Devonian . They were bottom-dwelling marine animals. In total only eight genera have been described. The group reached its highest diversity in the Lower Devonian, only a few species survived as far as the Upper Devonian.

features

They resemble primitive Arthrodirs , but the trunk armor was shorter and did not close behind the pectoral fins . Her body was flattened, her eyes stood on the top of her head, her pectoral fins stood out from her body. On all plates of the bone armor there were protruding, characteristic lines and tubercle-like elevations. The jaw and mouth of the Petalichthyida have not been preserved in any of the fossils found .

Systematics

The order Petalichthyida contains only one family , the Macropetalichthyidae.
