Petar Vukotić (Serbian-Cyrillic Петар Вукотић ; * 1826 in Ozrinići , Principality of Montenegro ; † 1907 ) was a Montenegrin vojvoda ( German : Duke ) and landowner who was involved in the Montenegrin-Ottoman War (1852-1853) and the Montenegrin-Ottoman War (1876–78) fought. He gained notoriety at the Battle of Vučji Do on July 18, 1876.

Career

Petar Vukotić was born in Ozrinići in 1826 as the son of Montenegrin Serdar Vukota Vukašinović . He was married to Jelena Vojvodić, who was born in the village of Viš near the town of Danilovgrad . The couple had three sons, Šale, Matan and Šćepan (nickname: Šarac), and a daughter named Milena . Vukotić was one of the largest landowners in the Principality of Montenegro and a close friend of Vojvoda Mirko Petrović-Njegoš , with whom he fought in the wars in the 1850s. The two friends decided to consolidate their alliance by marrying their children. In 1853 Milena, who was six years old at the time, was betrothed to Mirko's only son Nikola, who was twelve years old at the time. Nikola was the nephew and heir of the childless ruling Prince of Montenegro Danilo I. Milena had twelve children. One of these children was Elena , who later became King of Italy Victor Emanuel III. got married.
