Danilo II. Petrović-Njegoš
Danilo Petrović-Njegoš , Cyrillic Данило Петровић Његош (born May 25, 1826 in Njeguši , Montenegro; † August 13, 1860 in Kotor , Austrian Empire) was Prince-Bishop of Montenegro as Danilo II Petrović-Njegoš since 1851 . He gave up the office of bishop in 1852 and proclaimed himself secular Prince Danilo I of Montenegro .
history
After 1528 the Orthodox bishops of Cetinje were formally at the head of the state of Montenegro . Since 1697 the office of Vladik was hereditary in the Petrović Njegoš family. It was always passed on from uncle to nephew, since Orthodox bishops had to be unmarried and therefore could not have legitimate descendants. In 1851 Danilo's uncle Petar II found a sudden death caused by a lung disease.
Danilo succeeded him as Vladik and on March 13, 1852 proclaimed the Principality of Montenegro as a secular principality. The first war against the Ottomans broke out in 1852 . In 1855 he married Darinka Kvekić. Danilo and his older brother Mirko Petrović-Njegoš won on May 1, 1858 against the Ottoman Empire in the battle of Grahovac . When the Turks withdrew, a large amount of military equipment fell into the hands of the Montenegrins. These spoils of war were also used in the Wars of Independence of 1862 and 1875–1878. The victory over the Turks also had great diplomatic significance for Montenegro. The major European powers were thus forced to regulate the demarcation between the Ottoman Empire and Montenegro.
After the murder of the childless Danilos on August 13, 1860 in Kotor by Todor Kadić, Danilo's nephew Nikola became Prince of Montenegro.
