Mirko Petrović-Njegoš (Serbian-Cyrillic Мирко Петровић-Његош ; born August 19, 1820 in Njeguši , Principality of Montenegro ; † August 1, 1867 ) was a Montenegrin military commander, diplomat and poet . He belonged to the Petrović-Njegoš house . He was awarded the title veliki vojvoda ( German : Grand Prince) of Grahovo . He is also known as Vojvoda Mirko .

Career

Mirko Petrović-Njegoš was the son of Stanko Petrović-Njegoš and his wife Krstinja Vrbica. He was the older brother of Danilo II. Petrović-Njegoš and nephew of Petar II. Petrović-Njegoš , both Prince-Bishops of Montenegro. Mirko Petrović-Njegoš became known for his victory in the battle of Grahovac on May 1, 1858, in which he led the Montenegrin army against the army of the Ottoman Empire .

His epic work Junački spomenik (German: "Heldendenkmal") was published in 1864 in what was then the Montenegrin capital, Cetinje . It glorifies Montenegro and the Montenegrins. It also tells of the great victories over the Ottoman Empire.

Petrović-Njegoš married on October 26th July. / 7th November 1840 greg. his wife Stana Martinović (born June 15 . jul / 27 June 1824 greg. in Bajice , Principality of Montenegro, † December 31, 1893 jul. / January 12, 1894 greg. in Cetinje, Montenegro Principality) in Njeguši. The couple had three children, Nikola (born September 25th July / 7th October 1841 greg. † March 1, 1921), Princess Anastasia († March 29, 1879), married to Sava Plamenac, and Princess Maria, married to Captain Y. Gopcević
