The Peter Altmeier Monument in Koblenz is a memorial in honor of the former Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Peter Altmeier . The monument, inaugurated in 1981, is located in the Moselle complex (Peter-Altmeier-Ufer) not far from the Deutsches Eck .

history

The design for the privately financed Peter Altmeier monument comes from the Kusel artist Horst Schwab . He won the nationwide competition held in 1979 under the jury chaired by the President of the Landtag, Albrecht Martin . The monument was created in the summer of 1981 by the Hettenleidelheim sculptor Theo Rörig in the Wassum quarry in Miltenberg am Main and erected on the banks of the Moselle. On October 7, 1981, the inauguration took place in the Moselle complex (Peter-Altmeier-Ufer).

On August 28, 1982, the fifth anniversary of Altmeier's death, the monument was expanded to include a plaque on a stele . The plaque had to be re-cast shortly afterwards because it contained a spelling mistake.

For the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show , the Moselle facilities and thus the area around the monument were redesigned.

construction

Four blocks of red Main sandstone are meant to symbolize the areas from which the state of Rhineland-Palatinate arose. The portal-like monument illustrates the opening of the country or the bridge to France . The total height of the monument is six meters, the width four meters.

The following words are carved on the front:

Peter Altmeier / 1899-1977 / Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate / 1947-1969

On the plaque next to it reads:

“After World War II, Rhineland-Palatinate emerged from landscapes with different histories: from parts of the Prussian provinces of Rhineland and Hesse-Nassau, from Rheinhessen and the Bavarian Palatinate. Peter Altmeier was at the head of the men and women who built a new democratic country in western Germany after the terrible war damage. He opened the door to friendship with our western neighbors in this long-suffering border region and created close ties, especially with Burgundy. "
