Horst Schwab was a wanderer between the genres in his artistic work. The characteristic of his art is the overarching of his work.

During his studies he was primarily concerned with painting. In doing so, however, he preferred to take up sculptural themes: block-like, three-dimensional figures initially dominated his pictures. In the 1970s he gradually moved away from the image of nature without leaving it entirely. The human figure now became an abstract form and landscape elements came to the fore. Figure and landscape were his themes.

Graphics were repeatedly created in parallel to painting. Schwab was particularly interested in the various possibilities that the letterpress process offers. Here, as in his sculptures, the preoccupation with the human figure was predominant, experimenting with different materials and also working fragmentarily.
