Peter-Theodor Wilrich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter-Theodor Wilrich (born February 8, 1937 in Dresden ) is a German statistician and professor emeritus at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

From 1956 to 1962 Wilrich studied physics, electrical engineering and communications engineering at the University of Hamburg and the RWTH Aachen . He began his scientific career at the Institute for Statistics at RWTH Aachen University under the direction of Kurt Stange: first as a research assistant (1962–1970), then as a senior engineer (1970–1972) and scientific advisor and professor (1972–1976). He received his doctorate there in 1967 and qualified as a professor in 1972. From 1976 until his retirement in 2003 he was a full professor of statistics at the Free University of Berlin. He also conducted research at Stanford University .

Act

Peter-Theodor Wilrich is one of the leading representatives of technical statistics . As a student of Kurt Stange, he initially dealt with operating systems. The title of his dissertation was "The time behavior of open exponential queuing systems with one or more parallel operator stations and an infinite number of waiting places" . Subsequently, his main areas of work were statistical quality control and statistical analysis of measurement systems. In addition, he worked in other classic areas of technical statistics such as reliability control and test planning , combined with various applications of statistical methods. The regular international conferences “Frontiers in Statistical Quality Control” are well known , the results of which he has published in eight proceedings volumes. In addition, Wilrich is the author of four other monographs and more than 60 scientific articles.

Wilrich played a key role in founding the committee for technical statistics of the German Statistical Society (DStatG) in 1982; he headed the committee from 1983 to 1990. In 1996 the members of the DStatG elected him as their chairman. He held this office from 1996 to 2000; this was followed by a term of office as deputy chairman from 2000 to 2004. From 2003 to 2005 Wilrich headed the National Scientific Program Committee of the 54th World Congress of the International Statistical Institute in Berlin. In 2008 the German Statistical Society elected him an honorary member.

His research focused on statistical methods in quality management and the statistical assessment of the accuracy of measurement systems.
