The Peter and Paul Cathedral ( Russian Со́бор Свя́тых Петра́ и Па́вла ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in the Russian city of Peterhof . With a height of around 70 meters, it is one of the tallest Orthodox religious buildings in the world . Located near the Peterhof palace complex, the cathedral was built between 1894 and 1904 and has been a national cultural heritage of Russia since 1975 .

history

An application was made to build a new church in Peterhof in 1892, although by that time there were already more than a dozen churches in the place. Emperor Alexander III engaged the design of the cathedral . three architects, of whom Nikolai Sultanov emerged victorious in the spring of 1893.

Construction work on the structure began in 1894 with the excavation of the construction pit for the foundation. The foundation stone was laid on August 6, 1895 under Tsar Nicholas II . The work was supervised by the architect Vasily Antonovich Kossjakow , the cost of the construction was borne by the Ministry of the Imperial Court. Construction was completed within four years, with an additional three years spent on plastering and installing heating and ventilation. In the last two years the ceiling paintings were made and the iconostasis was installed.

The consecration of the cathedral took place on June 25, 1905, in the presence of the imperial family. The two side chapels were consecrated to Alexander Nevsky and St. Ksenija on September 10th of the same year.

In 1938, the cathedral was closed in the wake of the socialist seizure of power years earlier. At first there were plans to blow up the structure and thus completely destroy it. This project was not implemented, but most of the interior furnishings have been removed. During the Second World War , the Peter and Paul Cathedral, like many other structures in Peterhof, suffered great damage.

In 1989 the cathedral was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.
