Peter Anton Schleisner

Peter Anton Schleisner (born June 15, 1818 in Kongens Lyngby ; † February 26, 1900 ) was a Danish doctor and epidemiologist .

Life

Schleisner was the son of the textile manufacturer Gottlieb Daniel Schleisner and his wife Christiane, geb. Greener. His older brother was the painter Christian Andreas Schleisner .

It was in 1847 to the Westman Islands sent to the local tetanus - epidemic in newborns ( neonatal tetanus ) study. When he got there, the newborn mortality rate was between 600 and 740 per 1,000 children. He set up a small hospital and performed treatments with balsam of Peru . Schleisner suspected that the infections were caused by droplet infection , direct body contact or poor hygiene . His activity reduced newborn mortality to five percent.
