In 1974 he switched to teaching at the Pedagogical University of Esslingen , which was still in existence at the time , where he was appointed professor in 1977. working area

Baireuther mainly deals with the didactics of mathematics. He mainly examines the question of how basic mathematical ideas can be developed and promoted in children . In addition, he analyzes processes of understanding in mathematics lessons and works on the further development of the teaching culture in this subject area. His two books “Mathematics Lessons in Classes 1 and 2” and “Mathematics Lessons in Classes 3 and 4” are standard literature for teacher training for elementary schools in Baden-Württemberg. Baireuther is particularly interested in the so-called "form number aspect", i.e. the relationship between numbers and geometric shapes and what use this has for the development of basic mathematical ideas. In addition to individual specialist lectures and seminars, Baireuther teaches primarily in the field of primary school didactics.
