Peter Bellwood (archaeologist)

Peter Stafford Bellwood (* 1943 in Great Britain ) is Professor of Archeology at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra .

Bellwood studied at the University of Cambridge , graduating with a Master of Arts and a PhD, which is common in English-speaking countries .

From 1967 to 1972 Bellwood was a lecturer in prehistory at the University of Auckland and in 1973 moved to the Australian National University , where he also taught as a lecturer in prehistory until 1975. From 1976 to 1983 he was a senior lecturer there and was appointed associate professor in 1984. In 2000 he was finally given the professorship in the archeology department. Since then he has headed the Archeology School of Archeology and Anthropology, Faculty of Arts at the Australian National University in Canberra .

In 1983 Bellwood was elected a member of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and in 2016 an external member of the British Academy .

His book First Farmers. The Origins of Agricultural Societies received the 2006 Book Award from the Society for American Archeology .
