Peter Bing

Peter Michael Bing (* 1955 ) is an American classical philologist .

Life

He studied at Bowdoin College (BA 1976) and then as a doctoral student in Classical Philology at the Universities of Tübingen (1978/1979) and Michigan . In 1978 he obtained his MA and in 1981 his PhD with the thesis Callimachus' hymn to Delos 1-99. Introduction and commentary . Since completing his doctorate , he has taught classics at the University of Pennsylvania (1981–1987), Case Western Reserve University (1987–1989) and for the past 27 years at Emory University , where he was Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Classics. He was also a Junior Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies (1984/1985), two times Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Tübingen (1985 and 1992/1993), Visiting Fellow, Clare Hall , Cambridge University (1999/2000), and the Barrington Fellow of the Margo Tytus Visiting Fellowship Program, University of Cincinnati (2005/2006). He has now retired.

His research focus is Greek poetry (the archaic and the Hellenistic).
