Peter Engel (politician)

Peter Engel (born September 27, 1918 in Differdingen , Luxembourg ; † after 1961) was a German politician ( DPS ).

Engel grew up in Fraulautern . After attending elementary school (1924–1932) he worked as a worker. In 1937 he joined the Waffen SS and committed himself to serve twelve years. As a soldier he took part in the campaign in the west and in the war against the Soviet Union . After being wounded two times in 1941 and 1942, he was no longer fit for front use and was deployed as SS-Hauptscharführer in a sub-leader school. As a member of the SS-Totenkopfstandarte "Upper Bavaria" he belonged to the guards (external guard) of the Dachau concentration camp . In May 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets, from which he returned in 1946.

In September 1946 he settled in Ensdorf in the Saarland , but was arrested a few days later and interned politically. After his release in May 1948, he found employment in the Völklinger Hütte .

Engel joined the Democratic Party of Saar (DPS) and was elected local chairman of the Ensdorfer DPS. In 1955 he received a mandate in the Saarland state parliament , to which he belonged until 1961. There he was a member of the submissions, public works and reconstruction and social policy committees. Engel was particularly committed to the concerns of his home town of Ensdorf, including the construction of a protective dam costing 1.2 million DM to avert the risk of flooding in the Ensdorf area.
