Timo Kahlen

Timo Kahlen (* 1966 in Berlin ) is a German media and sound artist from Berlin.

life and work

Timo Kahlen has been creating sound sculptures and sound installations , wind and light works as well as experimental net art, photo and video works for more than 25 years . His interdisciplinary and intermediary work on the limits of perception, especially with immaterial, ephemeral materials such as wind and steam, light and shadow, noise, vibration and sound, was nominated for the Prize for Young European Photographers (1989), the Kahnweiler Prize for Sculpture (2001), the German Sound Art Prize (2006), a working grant from the Art Fund Foundation (2010) and numerous other grants, including a. in Washington, Berlin, Paris and on Guernsey.

His work has been presented internationally in more than 140 exhibitions of contemporary media art since the mid-1980s, including Sound Art (ZKM Karlsruhe, 2012–2013), Mediations Biennale: The Unknown (Poznań 2012), Tonspur expanded: The Loudspeaker (Vienna, 2010– 2011), Noise & Beauty (Stiftung Starke Berlin 2010), 60 × 60 (New York 2010), Manifesta 7: Scenarios (Italy 2008), Sound Art: German Sound Art Prize 2006 (Sculpture Museum Marl, art cologne, Traumzeit Festival Duisburg ), Wireless Experience (Helsinki 2004), Time Sculpture: Volume as Event (Oberösterreichische Landesgalerie Linz 1997) and the solo exhibition Timo Kahlen: Working with Wind (1991) for the foundation of Kunst-Werke Berlin .

Timo Kahlen is a master student at the Berlin University of the Arts (1993) with Dieter Appelt . He lives and works in Berlin. He is the son of video artist Wolf Kahlen and has been supporting the work of the Ruine der Künste Berlin , a place for material and immaterial arts , since 1985 . From 1993 to 1998 Kahlen was given a teaching position at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Humboldt University in Berlin in the fields of visual media and video art.

Timo Kahlen is a member of the German Association of Artists . He lives in Berlin.
