Peter Greenland

Peter Grönland , Danish: Peter Grønland , (born October 15, 1761 in Wilster , † December 20, 1825 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish lawyer , music critic , folk song collector and composer .

Peter Grönland was the son of the timber merchant and master carpenter Johann Grönland and Catharina Marg., Née Spanjer. He had a brother named Johann Friedrich (1777-1834).

Greenland studied law at the University of Kiel from 1782 to 1785 and then moved to Copenhagen, where he worked for the German law firm . From 1794 to 1810 he worked as an economic administrator for the Royal Porcelain Factory . Appointed to the Council of Justice from 1801, from 1803 he was a co-director of the treasury administration.

Greenland became important in the field of music. He worked together with Carl Friedrich Cramer , Johann Abraham Peter Schulz and Friedrich Ludwig Æmilius Kunzen and taught Christoph Ernst Friedrich Weyse himself . In the field of Danish music he was considered to be influential for the emergence of the “Romance-og Sange” tradition and supported the spread of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel . As a music critic and scientist, he wrote for leading German and Danish magazines. As a composer he created many songs, more than 50 of which were based on texts by Goethe . In addition, he dealt with the collection and harmonies of Scandinavian folk songs and thus gained lasting importance.

Greenland collected a significant amount of music, which later became part of the Weyse Collection of the Danish Royal Library . His manuscripts and correspondence were taken up by the Royal Library of Stockholm in addition to the Danish Royal Library .

From 1793 Greenland lived in childless marriage with Anna Johanne Styffgen (1763-1845).
