politics

Hänggi started his political career as a councilor in his home town of Nunningen. He later became, among other things, president of the CVP of the Thierstein district and the CVP of the canton of Solothurn . In the National Council elections in 1987, Hänggi was elected to the National Council.

In 1991 he was elected to succeed Alfred Rötheli in the government council of the canton of Solothurn. He was there in front of the finance and military directorate. In the 1993 elections, Hänggi was confirmed in office. In January 1994, Finance Director Hänggi had to inform the public about the critical situation at Solothurner Kantonalbank . The cantonal bank was subsequently restructured with taxpayers' money and then privatized. The events later went down in Solothurn history as the "Kantonalbank debacle". The Solothurn government and in particular finance director Hänggi were blamed for complicity in the decline of the cantonal bank through the media and a parliamentary commission of inquiry. In the aftermath of these events, Hänggi was withdrawn from the finance department by the government council. In the 1997 renewal elections, Hänggi only came sixth in the first ballot. Even if none of the other previous ones was re-elected in the first ballot, Peter Hänggi decided not to run in the second ballot due to his poor result. The CVP instead nominated Walter Straumann who made the election.
