Peter Hausen (born January 2, 1935 in Berlin ; † May 28, 2012 ) was a German developmental biologist .

Career

Hausen received his doctorate in 1962 at the mathematics and natural sciences faculty of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and qualified as a professor in 1966. On July 1, 1973, he joined the Max Planck Institute for Virus Research . Until his retirement in 2003 he was head of the cell biology department. In 1975 he was appointed director of the institute. At the University of Tübingen, Hausen was a member of the International Center for Ethics in Science .

He provided important insights into the transcription processes in mammalian cells and discovered for the first time concrete evidence of the molecular control of the separation behavior of cells during cotyledonous formation. His work on the early development of Xenopus laevis (clawed frog) helped to answer crucial molecular and cell biological questions.
