Soccer career

Peter Köhler came to 1. FC Magdeburg at the age of 13. There he went through the compulsory youth teams until he was used for the first time in the league team on March 23, 1985 in the cup semi-final game at BFC Dynamo (4: 3 for FCM). Just one week later, on March 30, 1985, he played his first league league game as a midfielder in the encounter between Motor Suhl and 1. FCM (0: 3). By the end of the 1984/85 season he was used in another seven first division games, in which he scored his first two league goals. For the 1985/86 season, the 1.75 m tall trained mechanical engineer was officially registered as a midfielder for the senior division team. However, for a long time Köhler could not prevail against the trio Halata , Bonan and Steinbach and initially had to accept the role of reservist. It was only when Steinbach temporarily left FCM in 1987 that Köhler was able to establish himself as a regular. In the 1988/89 season he was most successful with 25 of 26 point games and three goals during his GDR league time. Even after 1. FC Magdeburg missed promotion to professional football in 1991, Köhler remained loyal to the club. After two years in the NOFV amateur league, in which he played 52 point games, he completed his last competitive game for FCM on June 5, 1993 at the state cup final against Halleschen FC (3-2). Then Köhler moved to Schönebecker SV 1861 , with whom he rose to the association league and in 1997 reached the final of the state cup .
