Peter Karlotus

Peter Karlotus (French: Pierre Charlot ; * 1205/09; † October 9, 1249 ) was an illegitimate son of the French king Philip II August . His mother was probably a noblewoman from Arras .

He was raised by the royal chaplain William the Breton . This named him in his Verschronik ( La Philippide ): Petro Karloto Philippi regis Francorum filio . Peter bore the name of Charlemagne as a diminutive , making him the first Capetian ever to bear this name. His father obtained from Pope Honorius III. its legitimacy and the promise of an ecclesiastical career. He was first treasurer of the monastery of Saint-Martin of Tours before he was elected Bishop-Count of Noyon in 1240 . The rank of pair was associated with this dignity .

Peter took on the sixth crusade of his nephew, King Louis IX. , part. Matthew Paris reported his death when his ship crashed on the Egyptian coast while sailing from Cyprus to Damiette . His heart was buried in Noyon Cathedral.
