Peter Kliegel

Peter Kliegel (born December 10, 1939 in Silesia ), also referred to in Chilean documents as Peter Kliegel Stiller , is a German Catholic pastor who works in Chile .

He was ordained on November 1, 1967 and built the Maximilian Kolbe settlement in Osorno with slum dwellers in the 1970s according to the principle of " helping people to help themselves " with houses, schools, churches, a music school and youth villages as accommodation for students during the week. Around 1,000 houses were built, and through this initiative the residents achieved material prosperity, social cohesion and sustainable social advancement . Among other things, the school "Sor Teresa de Los Andes" has existed in the Maximilian Kolbe settlement since 1989, of which Kliegel is the legal representative.

Called "Padre Pedro" in Osorno, he was the first German to receive honorary citizenship in Chile , published on August 17, 1995.

In October 2017 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his long-standing humanitarian mission in Chile .

Kliegel grew up in Dillenburg in Hesse . He is the brother of the German cellist Maria Kliegel .
