Peter Kothe (born July 8, 1939 in Ströbitz ; † August 23, 2015 in Berlin ) was a German set designer and book illustrator who, in addition to his set designs at numerous German theaters, also became internationally known for his artistic contributions to films by Rosa von Praunheim .

Life

After passing his Abitur, Peter Kothe first studied architecture at the Berlin School of Fine and Applied Arts , where Selman Selmanagić was one of his teachers . After successfully passing his diploma in 1962, he initially worked as a career changer as a set designer for television in the GDR . This was followed by further engagements at theaters in the GDR, such as from 1977 at the Kleist Theater in Frankfurt (Oder) , at the Elbe-Elster Theater in Wittenberg and at the Magdeburg cabaret Die Kugelblitze.

In a letter to the government of the GDR on October 29, 1976, Peter Kothe applied to be allowed to "travel to every country in the world" in order to broaden his artistic horizons, which was refused. He was expatriated on October 22, 1984.

From 1985 to 1988 he worked at the Städtische Bühnen Bielefeldt. In 1988 Peter Kothe moved back to Berlin, where he has lived on Winterfeldtstrasse ever since. From then on he worked repeatedly with Rosa von Praunheim. In 1999 he was responsible for the production of the film I am my own wife and in 1999 The Einstein des Sex for costumes and equipment.

After his death in 2015, Peter Kothe's partner gave the artistic estate to the Schwules Museum Berlin .
