Peter Markham

Peter Markham is a UK-based lecturer, film director and writer. From 2010 to 2018 he was director of the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles .

Life

After completing his theater and English studies at the University of Hull , Markham worked in various fields in the British film industry. From 1990 he was occasionally assistant to Anthony Minghella , with whom he had studied in Hull, and who hired him in 1996 as second unit director for his film The English Patient . In 1992 he shot a TV version of Black Poppies for the BBC with theater director John Burgess, staged by Burgess for the RNT , which deals with the experiences of black British soldiers in World War II. In 1993 he directed The Cormorant, his first and only feature film , for the BBC series “Screen Two” . The film with Ralph Fiennes in the leading role. was awarded two Welsh BAFTA Awards. In 2002 Martin Scorsese hired him as Second Unit Director for his feature film Gangs of New York .

From 2003 he taught film directing as a Senior Lecturer at the American Film Institute (AFI) in Los Angeles , and from 2010 to 2018 he was director of the AFI Conservatory . After leaving the AFI, Markham gives workshops and teaches master classes at international film schools.

Peter Markham is married to fashion designer Barbara Tfank and lives in West Hollywood , California.
