Peter Marshall (historian)

Peter Hugh Marshall (born August 23, 1946 in Bognor Regis , England ) is a British historian and author .

Marshall attended Steyning Grammar School in Sussex . Afterwards he was a “purser cadet” in the P&O Orient Shipping Company and sailed around the world before giving English lessons in Senegal , West Africa. He then returned to England and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, French and Spanish from the University of London and a Masters and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sussex . He has taught philosophy and literary studies at several UK universities and colleges.

Marshall has written more than 15 books that have been translated into numerous languages. His circumnavigation of Africa was implemented in a six-part TV series and his trip through Ireland became the subject of a radio broadcast. He also wrote several articles for British newspapers and journals.

In 2018, Marshall was awarded the Wolfson History Prize for Heretics and Believers: A History of the English Reformation . In the same year he was also elected to the British Academy .
