Peter Patrick Fitzroy Martyn-Hemphill, 5th Baron Hemphill (born September 5, 1928 - April 6, 2012 in Galway ) was a British peer and politician of the Conservative Party .

life and career

Martyn-Hemphill was born on September 5, 1928 to Martyn Charles Andrew Hemphill, 4th Baron Hemphill and Emily Sears († 1990). He grew up in Tulira Castle , Gort , County Galway , the former home of Edward Martyn . His father was a director at the Mullingar Racecourse.

He attended Downside School in Bath and later Brasenose College at Oxford University , where he graduated with a Master of Arts .

Mond became Master of the Hunt in 1957 and remained so until the mid-1980s (specifically from 1957 to 1960, from 1967 to 1969 and 1972 to 1985). In 1965 he was elected a member of the Irish National Hunt Society . He was also the Senior Steward of the Irish National Hunt in 1975 and 1980 and a member of the Turf Club . In the latter, he was elected in 1972. He implemented many modernizations in this area.

His last name was changed from Hemphill to Martyn-Hemphill in 1959, one year after the death of his grandmother Mary. He belonged to the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee and was chairman ( chairman ) of the Galway Race Committee from 1990 to 1996, and member of 1958 by 2004.

Membership in the House of Lords

After the death of his father in 1957, he inherited the title of Baron Hemphill and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . According to Hansard, he never spoke up there. The House of Lords Act 1999 ended its membership. He was not listed in the Register of Hereditary Peers , which are available for by-election.

Family and death

He married Olivia Anne Ruttledge, daughter of Major Robert Francis Ruttledge , on April 17, 1952 . Together they have two daughters and a son.

Martyn-Hemphill died in Galway hospital on April 6, 2012 at the age of 83 . His son Charles Andrew Martyn Martyn-Hemphill (* 1954) inherited the title .

Honor

Martyn-Hemphill was honored with the Pro Merito Melitensi Order of Merit .
