Peter Millman

Peter Mackenzie Millman (born August 10, 1906 in Toronto , † December 11, 1990 in Ottawa ) was a Canadian astronomer .

He studied astronomy at the University of Toronto and graduated in 1929. From 1933 to 1940 he worked at the David Dunlap Observatory . In early 1941, he signed up for service with the Royal Canadian Air Force . After the war, he joined the Dominion Observatory in Ottawa in 1946 .

His main field of work were meteors and meteorites . He achieved one of his most successful observation campaigns in 1946 when the Draconids' meteor shower offered the opportunity to take spectacular spectrophotographs on the night of October 9th to 10th .

Honors

In 1954 he was awarded the J. Lawrence Smith Medal of the National Academy of Sciences .

The Martian crater Millman and the asteroid (2904) Millman were named after him.
