Peter Motzan

Peter Motzan (born July 7, 1946 in Sibiu ) is a German literary critic and translator.

Life

Between 1965 and 1970 he studied philology (German and Romanian) at the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj . He was a founding member of the student magazine "Echinox" and between 1968 and 1972 one of the editors of the German-language pages of this publication. As a student, he joined the Romanian Communist Party .

Motzan made his debut in 1968 with an article about Rainer Maria Rilke in the Hermannstädter Zeitung , which he then published in the first edition of Echinox under the title "Rainer Maria Rilke și lumea obiectelor".

After completing his studies, he worked at this university until 1978 as an assistant and then as a lecturer. In 1980 he received his doctorate from the University of Bucharest with a dissertation on "Romanian-German poetry after 1944". In 1988 he applied for resettlement to Germany; During this time he made use of translations and private lessons.

In 1990 he moved to Germany and in 1991 worked as a guest lecturer at the Chair of Modern German Literature at the University of Marburg. In 1992 he became a research assistant at the Institute for German Culture and History of Southeast Europe at the LMU Munich (IKGS). In 2003 he received the title Doctor honoris causa from the University of Cluj-Napoca.
