Peter Sandrart (* around 1656 Strasbourg ; † 1722 Magdeburg ), entrepreneur (tobacco manufacturer), long-time mayor of the Palatinate Colony in Magdeburg (1700–1722).

Life, family

Peter Sandrart came from an old, aristocratic Huguenot family who, for religious reasons, left their homeland, Hainaut , which was under Catholic, Spanish rule, in the 16th century and found a new home in Strasbourg. After the early death of his father Jakob Sandrart (* around 1630, † around 1670), Peter Sandrart's mother Jakobea de Barry (around 1635, † after 1680) married the entrepreneur Daniel Würtz (* around 1640). In Strasbourg, which has been French since 1681, the Sandrart / Würtz family has been exposed to religious pressure again since the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685, although Alsace was not formally affected by this political measure by the French king. So the brothers Peter and Georg Sandrart followed the invitation edict of the Great Elector with their mother Jakobea de Barry, stepfather Daniel Würtz and the 4 half-sisters (daughters of stepfather Würtz) and went to Magdeburg in 1690. Peter Sandrart was married to Anna Elisabeth Burry (* around 1664). The marriage resulted in 10 children. No descendants are known of their 3 sons.

Public work

Shortly after his arrival in Magdeburg, Peter Sandrart became a citizen of the Palatinate colony on June 16, 1690 . Together with his stepfather Daniel Würtz he founded the first tobacco factory in Magdeburg. Peter's brother Georg Sandrart (married to Elisabeth Timmermann ) was also co-owner . It was set up in the former large, electoral manufactory on today's Georgenplatz. Peter Sandrart was very successful as an entrepreneur; therefore he left his children (6 daughters and 1 son) the considerable inheritance of 30,000 thalers! In 1700 Sandrart was elected mayor of the Palatinate colony. Here he was the successor to Theodor Timmermann , with whose descendants the Sandrart family later entered into various family ties ( Dohlhoff , Schwartz ). He kept the office until his death in 1722. Later, for decades, members of the Sandrart family and the related Schwartz and Dohlhoff families were repeatedly elected to the office of mayor of the Palatinate Colony. Due to their experience as wholesale merchants or industrialists, they also proved themselves in this office.
