Georg Sandrart
Georg Sandrart (born May 15, 1665 in Strasbourg , † October 8, 1727 in Magdeburg ) was a merchant and tobacco manufacturer in Magdeburg.
Life, family
Georg Sandrart was a civil descendant of a noble family from Hainaut in Flanders. His Reformed family had left Catholic, Spanish Flanders for religious reasons at the end of the 16th century and settled in Strasbourg. In 1681 Louis XIV annexed Strasbourg as well as part of his reunification policy . In 1685 he repealed the Edict of Nantes and thus freedom of religion in France . Although Alsace and thus Strasbourg were excluded, there was still increased pressure on the non-Catholic population. For many Protestants , whose ancestors had to flee the Spanish Netherlands for religious reasons , this was the reason to leave France.
Georg Sandrart, son of Huguenot Jakobea de Barry (* 1635, † after 1680), set out, as a young merchant and tobacco manufacturer , together with his stepfather Daniel Würtz (* 1640) and his brother Peter Sandrart as a religious refugee to Path. They followed the edict of invitation from the Great Elector and went to Magdeburg. On January 28, 1695 (at the age of 30), Georg Sandrart became a citizen of the Palatinate colony of Magdeburg. On February 27, 1696, he married Elisabeth Timmermann (* around 1675 in Mannheim, † around 1745 in Magdeburg), a daughter of the pharmacist and mayor of the Palatinate Colony of Magdeburg, Theodor Timmermann . The couple had eleven children, seven of whom are known by name. Through his children, Georg Sandrart was connected to many important families in Magdeburg, including: Dohlhoff, Humbert, Reclam, Wegely and Schwartz , and later also Maquet and Gaertner . His family came from three mayors of the Palatinate Colony: his brother Peter Sandrart (22 years), his son Johann Georg (* around 1690, † 1763 in Magdeburg) (15 years) and his grandson Georg Philipp (* around 1738) (4 years) . The granddaughter Philippine Jacobea Sandrart (* around 1740, † 1803 in Magdeburg) was the wife of the mayor Georg Philipp Dohlhoff .
Act
The two new residents of Magdeburg, Sandrart and Würtz, came from Strasbourg, an early area of tobacco growing, and were probably already active in this branch there. In 1690 they acquired the large electoral manufactory at today's Georgenplatz, Magdeburg. This is where the tobacco manufacturer they had now founded , which has been very successful for decades, found its place. After the death of the co-founder of the manufactory, Daniel Würtz, his son Abraham Würtz followed.
Through his marriage to Elisabeth Timmermann, Sandrart also became the owner of the Pfälzer Fischapotheke in Magdeburg (Alter Markt 13) founded by his father-in-law Theodor Timmermann . The pharmacy he perform Johann Christoff Schilling, since he himself was not a pharmacist.
With his stepfather Daniel Würtz and his brother Peter Sandrart (* around 1656; † 1722) he had other joint ventures in addition to the tobacco factory mentioned, e.g. B. Houses on Georgenplatz. Georg Sandrart also owned a property on Ritterstrasse . At the beginning of the 18th century, "his whole house" (meaning the number of people belonging to it) stood out because of its size: in addition to himself, his wife and three children, 124 servants and workers are listed. After the death of her husband, Georg Sandrart's wife, Elisabeth Timmermann, took over the management of the tobacco factory.
