Peter William Barlow (born February 1, 1809 in Woolwich , Kent , † May 20, 1885 in London ) was a British civil engineer.

Life

He was the son of Peter Barlow (1776–1862), who taught mathematics and physics at the Woolwich Military Academy. His brother William Henry Barlow was also a well-known civil engineer.

In 1862 he built the Lambeth Bridge in London, a suspension bridge that has now been replaced by another structure. In 1864 he patented an improved iron tunnel shield that was used by James Henry Greathead in the construction of the Thames tunnel for the Tower Subway in London in 1870. It provided improvements over the old design by Marc Isambard Brunel , which had previously been used for a Thames tunnel (see shield tunneling ).

In 1845 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society .
