Peter von Carnap (1696–1760)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter von Carnap (born April 1696 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ); † January 1760 there ) was Mayor of Elberfeld.

Peter von Carnap was the son of his father of the same name, Peter von Carnap (1669–1736), who had been mayor in 1722 and his wife Susanna Teschemacher (1670–1744), granddaughter of the mayor from 1616, Johannes Teschemacher († 1625). Son Peter was baptized on April 15, 1696 in Elberfeld. He later became a wealthy businessman and married Maria Magdalena Teschemacher (1701–1751), the daughter of Gerhard Werner Teschemacher (1666–1740), the mayor from 1722 on May 16, 1732. After the death of Maria Magdalena Teschemacher, with Peter von Carnap had no children, he married a distant relative of hers in November 1752, Anna Sara Teschemacher (1699–1775), with whom he had no children either.

Peter von Carnap became common man in 1738 and mayor the following year. There were four names on the proposal list, three of which were related to former mayors. In the end, Peter was able to prevail because the voters believed that a childless but wealthy businessman would most likely be able to take care of official business. In the following year Carnap became a city judge and in 1741, 1742 and 1744 a councilor. After a few years he was proposed again for mayor in 1750 and 1753, but could not prevail against the respective candidates. In 1756 he was again a council member. He died in early 1760, the funeral took place on January 24th.
