Peter of Sury
Peter von Sury OSB (born June 14, 1950 in Solothurn ) is a Swiss Benedictine and abbot of Beinwil and Mariastein .
Life
Peter von Sury, from a former patrician family in Solothurn , studied law, journalism, history and philosophy in Bern and Freiburg in Üechtland from 1969 . In 1974 he joined the religious order of the Benedictine Abbey in Mariastein. He made his profession on January 7, 1979 . From 1976 to 1982 he studied Catholic theology at the Philosophical-Theological College in Einsiedeln and at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome as well as Canon Law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. On September 8, 1981 he was ordained a priest by Otto Wüst .
In 1982 he became pastor for the parishes Hofstetten-Flüh and Rodersdorf and in 1993 dean of the dean's office in Dorneck-Thierstein. He works at the interdiocesan marriage court in Friborg and teaches canon law at the theological school of the Einsiedeln monastery . Since 2001 he has been a member of the Metzerlen-Mariastein community's works and environmental commission.
On June 6, 2008, Peter von Sury was elected abbot for life (75 years of age) by the Benedictine convent of Mariastein Abbey. He received the abbot's benediction on July 5, 2008 in the Basilica of Mariastein from Basel Bishop Kurt Koch . He is the 41st abbot of Beinwil and the 19th abbot of Mariastein .
On May 28, 2015, the abbots and one delegate each from the Swiss Benedictine monasteries in Fischingen monastery elected him to be deputy of the new abbot president Christian Meyer of the Swiss Benedictine congregation founded in 1602 with the monasteries Einsiedeln, Muri-Gries (based in Bozen, South Tyrol), Fischingen, Engelberg, Disentis, Mariastein and Marienberg (South Tyrol). The term of office is six years. Peter von Sury is thus a high dignitary of the congregation and major superior in terms of canon law.
