Petilipinnis grunniens is a freshwater fish from the family of the croakers (Sciaenidae) and the only type within its genus . The generic name indicates the slender anal fin (from Latin petilus - slim and pinna - fin). The species occurs in the Amazon basin in Brazil and in the Cuyuní and Essequibo in Guyana .

The genus Petilipinnis was defined in 2002 on the basis of the characteristics anal fin with only one hard ray, dorsal fin with 29 to 32 soft rays and carrot-shaped swim bladder with short, branched appendages at the front end.

Petilipinnis grunniens is an elongated fish with an almost cylindrical body, flattened belly and up to about 28 centimeters in length. The body is light brown with irregular brown spots, especially in the front part of the body. The belly is silvery. The snout is pointed with closely spaced, crescent-shaped nostrils. The eye is elliptical and longer than it is high. The small mouth is below and has a band of small, villi-like teeth per jaw. The front cover is slightly serrated on the edge. The gill spines are short and thin. Except for the cycloid scales on the snout and front cover, the scales are ctenoid . The dorsal fin is light brown in the front part with a dark edge and has ten hard rays. The rear part with a hard and 29 to 32 soft rays appears irregularly streaked due to many brown spots. The other fins are yellow with a slightly silvery sheen. The pectoral fins are relatively small. The caudal fin is diamond-shaped.
