Petr Štěpánek (born September 3, 1965 in Kladno ) is a Czech politician , biologist and university professor . He was chairman of the Green Party in the Czech Republic from January 2018 to January 2020 . He has been the mayor of the Prague 4 district since 2014 .

education

Petr Štěpánek graduated in Molecular Biochemistry from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Charles University in Prague and obtained a scientific degree during a five-year stay at the State University of New York and the Institute of Experimental Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic . He ended his scientific career in 1996.

In the 1990s he taught at the State University of New York. Until 2006 he taught Czech and Slovak politics at Charles University.

Political career

In 1990 he was co-opted for the Citizens' Forum in the National Committee of the City of Prague and was subsequently elected twice to the Prague City Council. In 1991 he became chairman of the citizens' forum in Prague. Between 2001 and 2003 he was chairman of the Strana pro otevřenou společnost (Party for an Open Society). In 2003 he joined the Green Party. From 2004 to 2007 he was deputy chairman of the Green Party.

From 2006 to 2009 he was Prague City Councilor for Environment , Energy and Cycling . He has been the mayor of the Prague 4 district since 2014.

On January 20, 2018, he was elected chairman of the Czech Greens.
