Petre Sebeşanu Aurelian (born December 13, 1833 in Slatina , Principality of Wallachia , today: Romania ; † January 24, 1909 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian politician of the National Liberal Party ( Partidul Național Liberal ) , who among other things was Prime Minister of the Kingdom between 1896 and 1897 Romania was.

Life

Aurelian completed his school education at the national college "Sfântul Sava" in Bucharest and studied agricultural science at the Institut national agronomique Paris-Grignon in France . In the Principality of Romania he held the post of Minister for Agriculture, Trade and Public Works in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Ion C. Brătianu between 1877 and 1878. In the Kingdom of Romania he served in the fourth Brătianu cabinet from 1882 to 1884 as Minister for Education and Culture (Ministru al Educației) and most recently again as Minister for Public Works (Ministru al Lucrărilor Publice) between 1887 and 1888 . During this time he was one of the founders of the Bucharest Athenaeum (Ateneul Român), which was built between 1885 and 1888 . After he was the successor of Nicolae Filipescu from October until his replacement by CF Robescu in December 1895 briefly mayor of Bucharest , he acted from 1895 to 1896 as President of the Chamber of Deputies (Adunarea Deputaților) .

On November 21, 1896, Aurelian replaced his party friend Dimitrie Alexandru Sturdza as Prime Minister (Președinții Consiliului de Miniștri) of the Kingdom of Romania and held this office until March 26, 1897, whereupon Dimitrie Alexandru Sturdza in turn became his own successor. In his cabinet, he also held the offices of Minister for Agriculture, Industry, Trade and Domains, and from March 19 to 26, 1897, he also temporarily took over the post of Foreign Minister . In 1901 he replaced Petru Poni as president of the Romanian Academy (Academia Română) founded on April 1, 1866 and held this office until 1904, when Ioan Kalinderu succeeded him.

In Prime Minister Sturdza's third cabinet he held the post of Interior Minister (Ministru de internal) from February 14, 1901 to July 18, 1902 , and then again as Minister of Agriculture and Industry between July 18 and November 14, 1902 , Commerce and domains. He then took over from Eugeniu Stătescu for the first time as President of the Senate (Senatul) on November 16, 1902, and remained in this until he was replaced by Constantin Boerescu on December 23, 1904. On June 9, 1907, he again dissolved Constantin Boerescu as President of the Senate from until his death on January 24, 1909, whereupon Division General Constantin Budişteanu on January 28, 1909 was his successor.
