The Petrie Ice Rises are a chain of around ten ice domes off the coast of the West Antarctic Alexander I Island . They rise from the Wilkins Ice Shelf .
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) discovered them during radar measurements from the aircraft on February 11, 1967. Landsat images were later used to determine their position more precisely. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1980 after the electrical engineer David Lyall Petrie (* 1940), who worked for BAS and the Scott Polar Research Institute from 1967 to 1970 and was involved in the discovery of the ice domes.
