Images that have been interpreted as a spring procession with ships, acrobats and luras .

The Högsbyn petroglyphs are a large collection of rock carvings from the Bronze Age in the Swedish landscape of Dalsland .

The carvings are located north of Brudfjällsvägen in the vicinity of Högsbyn in Bengtsfors municipality . They can be found here on almost all outcrops . The petroglyphs are most dense on a peninsula in Lake Råvarp , on which there is also a nature reserve . Here the first images were rediscovered by Lars Hesselgren in 1718. Dating back to the Bronze Age with an origin between 2500 and 3000 years ago was done with the help of similar representations from graves. The limestone shale found here was quite easy to work with.

There are a variety of different figures and shapes. Among the petroglyphs are depictions of people, ship-like structures, animal figures, bowls , pictures of foot and hand prints, wheel crosses , snake-like loops, roughly sketched trees or shapes that were interpreted as anchors . Individual stones with petroglyphs are in the foundations of old buildings.

In addition to the rock carvings, there are other Bronze Age evidence in the nature reserve, such as roes , other graves and stone setting . The number of petroglyphs found is over 2000, and more are being found all the time. To improve visibility, many incisions have been filled with red paint.
