The Petrotec AG , based in North Rhine-Westphalia Borken is a German manufacturer of biodiesel from used cooking fats gastronomy, vegetable fats and other fats.

It was one of the pioneers of the German biodiesel industry and is now one of the largest disposal companies for used cooking oil in Germany.

Petrotec AG acts as a pure holding company ; operating subsidiaries are “Vital Fettrecycling GmbH” in Borken-Burlo, which processes the raw materials and produces biodiesel, and “Petrotec Biodiesel GmbH” in Südlohn-Oeding , which acts as a sales company. Another Petrotec plant is located in Emden , and an administrative branch in Ratingen .

history

In 1991 the animal feed manufacturer "Bewital KG" founded the subsidiary "Vital Fettrecycling GmbH" at the Borken-Burlo site. In 1995 “Bewital Fette” set up a disposal concept for used fats. From 1998 Bewital developed its own process for the production of biodiesel. In 2000, a pilot plant for biodiesel production with an annual capacity of 12,000 tons was built, from which the subsidiary Petrotec emerged. This is why Petrotec is considered one of the German pioneers in the biodiesel industry, especially in the production of used cooking oil and other vegetable fats. In 2002 a new plant with a capacity of around 50,000 tons per year was put into operation, and in 2005 it was expanded to an annual capacity of 85,000 tons.

As part of a restructuring of the Bewital Group, Petrotec and Vital-Fettrecycling were sold by the owner family to the private equity company Warburg Pincus in 2006 for 70.2 million euros . With effect from November 6, 2006, Petrotec AG was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The proceeds of 98 million euros from the IPO were largely used by Warburg Pincus to repay the loans taken out for the purchase from IKB. In 2008, a biodiesel plant with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons was put into operation in the seaport of Emden, which also includes a laboratory and a tank farm for used cooking oil and biodiesel and its own loading and unloading unit at the port pier. A large part of the biodiesel produced is exported to the countries of the European Union and the United States , and a large part of the raw materials comes from overseas. In 2009 the existing subsidiaries in France and Poland were dissolved.

At the end of 2010 / beginning of 2011, Petrotec hit the national and international headlines when it became known that the animal feed manufacturer Harles und Jentzsch in Uetersen had been declaring considerable quantities of mixed fatty acids - residues from biodiesel production - for technical use through Petrotec's Dutch distributor "Olivet NV" and were contaminated with dioxins for unexplained reasons , had obtained and processed.
