The Petruskirche , a church building in Heselbach, a hamlet in the municipality of Baiersbronn in the Freudenstadt district , was built as a chapel by monks from the Reichenbach monastery around 1170 . Traces of its original Romanesque architecture have been preserved. On the inside of the south wall of the churchyard there is a Romanesque stone image of St. Peter with a key and a book (relief).

history

The name of the place is derived from "Bach an den Haseln". Count Palatine Ludwig von Tübingen donated the village of Heselbach to the Reichenbach monastery in 1289; henceforth the people of Heselbach have to do small labor services to the monastery. The old Petrusstein in the south wall points to the namesake of the church.

The Romanesque foundation building, which has undergone various changes over the centuries (the basement of the tower and the triumphal arch are still Romanesque), today presents itself as a Gothic complex. Above the south portal is a tympanum from the founding period, which depicts the returning Christ as King and Judge of the world (stone sculpture carved from white red sandstone), including the four evangelist symbols - man, lion, bull and eagle - and the lamb. In the left corner of the arc field there is a head that has become unrecognizable. The round-arched, Romanesque triumphal arch leads from the nave to the lower floor of the choir tower , which is covered with a barrel vault . The font is dated to the year 1450.

In 1957/1958 the church was renewed. The choir window today shows Christ crucified. The oldest bells in the church district of Freudenstadt are in the Heselbach church.
