Petter Hegre

Petter Hegre (born September 8, 1969 in Stavanger , Norway ) is a photographer and director .

life and work

Hegre began his photography career as an exchange student in the USA . After completing military service in his homeland, he returned to the United States and began studying photography at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara . From 1991 he assisted Richard Avedon in New York , then returned to Norway and worked as a professional photographer in Stavanger. He is married to the model Luba Shumeyko . Together with her, Hegre is also the initiator and publisher of the New Nude magazine , a magazine specifically dedicated to nude photography .

Hegre is known for daring, technically demanding nude photographs. They appear puristic and aim for simplicity and clarity. The style is reflected in a turning away from the artificial aesthetics of “conventional” nude photography (which has an abstract and anonymous effect through flowing transitions or cutouts). As once the photographers of the New Objectivity , Hegre wants to reproduce the people and subjects in the sense of straight photography soberly and as precisely as possible. The portraits (mostly full nudes, half or full-length portraits, the representation standing or sitting) are "brutally" direct, factual, free of artifacts, sometimes very provocative exhibitionistic, sometimes rough and pornographic and can all be assigned to the genre of erotic photography . Some critics accuse his nudes of using the methods and technology (lighting, perspective, attention-grabbing accessories, etc.) of product photography, which reduces the models to pure objects. However, the gestures and poses of the models and the staging of the acts always strive for an elegant appearance and an aesthetic concept.

My Wife (2000) is his first large illustrated book, in which he primarily uses nudes of his first wife Svanborg Thorisdottir. In addition to his commercially successful illustrated books, he produced three short films that also contain nude scenes.
