The Pfahlberg is a large stone grave in the area of the city of Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt . This grave complex was located in the Sülzegrund district of Magdeburg near the streams Große Sülze and Kleine Sülze .

history

Already in historical times the tomb was used to extract building material. Rock breakers had mostly crushed the large stones and transported them away, so that essentially rubble remained. The grave then remained untouched for a long time. During the GDR era, the Kannenstieg large housing estate was built south of the Pfahlberg . The burial mound became a popular playground. In this context, there were again interventions in the soil of the hill.

The monument protection authorities therefore decided in 1984 to carry out a proper excavation.

excavation

The remains of a large stone grave were uncovered. However, only a one meter high stone remained. The stone had a hole that was supposed to be used to detonate it. The grave originally consisted of six large bearing stones. The floor, which was covered with a layer of pebbles and a layer of clay on top, was deepened in the shape of a trough. The interior of the grave was three meters wide and two to three meters long.

Skeletal remains and a cup were found in the former burial chamber. The cup belonged to the Walternienburg pottery from the time between 2800 and 2300 BC. A large number of shards were found in the entire grave complex.

The Pfahlberg was also used for burials in later periods of prehistory and early history. Undecorated vessels from the period between 2000 and 1600 BC were found close to the top of the hill. In addition, other body and cremation graves were found on the burial site .

Surname

It is assumed that the name Pfahlberg goes back to the possibly existing function of the mountain at a later date as a support for a border post to demarcate fields.

The surrounding field names were also derived from the mountain. For example, both the Pfahlberg and the first to third Pfahlwuhne are recorded on maps from 1838 . Since 1996, a new street built nearby has been called Am Pfahlberg . The industrial area created there is also known as the Pfahlberg.

A pile of stones on a hill and an information board north of the industrial park reminds of the historical place.
