The Ebriach parish church is located in Ebriach in the market town of Eisenkappel-Vellach in the Völkermarkt district in Carinthia . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to St. John the Baptist belongs to the deanery Eberndorf / Dobrla vas in the diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

In 1367 a chapel of St. Maria in Obriach is mentioned in a document.

The church building, which was essentially Romanesque and later changed to Gothic, was expanded in baroque style. The church was restored inside in 1987 and outside in 1993.

architecture

The nave of the church has a shingled hipped roof. The late Gothic pointed arch portal in the simple, hipped western front is protected by a pillar-less sign with a hipped roof. The choir has buttresses from the mid-14th century. The broad, compact Romanesque tower stands north of the nave. A late Gothic fresco of Christophorus on the east wall of the tower is dated 1525. The lower area is badly weathered.

The interior of the church is a nave with a wooden flat ceiling. The lower view of the gallery is dated 1633 and the parapet 1786. The triumphal arch is a pointed arch. The choir has a ribbed vault on consoles from the 15th century and three tracery windows. The two southern choir windows have partially preserved stained glass from the middle of the 14th century, above Maria and John the Baptist kneeling, below the Adoration of the Kings . There are more glass paintings in the Diocesan Museum in Klagenfurt . In 1987 frescoes with scenes from the Passion of Christ with Christ on the Mount of Olives , the Judas kiss , Christ before Pilate , the flagellation and the crucifixion , as well as the crosses of the Apostles were exposed on the north wall of the choir , probably a work by the master von Einersdorf.

Furnishing

The high altar on a small base consists of a round-arched niche with flanking columns and above it a central attachment with an oval frame and two small niches on both sides with small figures of female saints with decoration as fittings and cartilage. In the middle is a Madonna from 1500, above it the Coronation of Mary from the middle of the 17th century - restored in 1991. The sculptures John the Baptist and John the Evangelist from around 1500, restored in 1994, stand above the sacrificial arches .
