Parish Church of Gaflenz

The Roman Catholic parish church of Gaflenz is located in the center of the municipality of Gaflenz in the Steyr-Land district in Upper Austria . It is consecrated to St. Andrew and belongs to the Weyer Pastoral Care Association in the Weyer dean's office . The church is a listed building .

history

The parish of Gaflenz was first mentioned in a document in 1140. The originally early Gothic church was rebuilt and expanded in 1464. In 1948 a restoration took place, in 1988/89 an extensive restoration and expansion.

Church building

The church consists of a three-bay nave with an irregularly shifted ribbed vault and a higher, cross-rib vaulted choir with a 5/8 end from the first half of the 14th century, as well as a northern extension from 1989.

On the south wall of the choir there are early Gothic frescoes that were exposed in 1948 and restored in 1949. They show scenes from the life of Mary . In the choir vault there are frescoes depicting the four evangelists. According to the inscription on the triumphal arch , these were painted in 1617. However, the current appearance dates from the first half of the 19th century. A restoration took place in 1948. In the south, the choir is adjoined by a three-bay, ribbed vaulted extension with a flying buttress that supports the triumphal arch. The tower with onion helmet and lantern is attached to the west. Most of it dates from 1697 and was renovated in 1738. A two-bay vestibule with a ribbed vault connects to the tower. Fragments of a fresco of St. Christopher are preserved on the former southern outer wall, today in the roof structure of the later extension . The fresco was probably made at the beginning of the 14th century. There are also two late Gothic portals on this wall.

Furnishing

The interior is largely neo-Gothic . However, there are also several late Gothic wooden sculptures: on the triumphal arch a standing Madonna and Child from the end of the 15th century, in the northern extension a seated one from 1480/90 and in the Sacred Heart Chapel figures of the Apostles Peter and Paul (around 1470) . In the tower chapel there is a Pietà from the 15th century on the altar , and in the sacristy there is a figure of St. Dionysius from the end of the 15th century.

A Baroque painting from 1710 by Johann Karl von Reslfeld hangs in the northern extension . It shows the "torture of St. Vitus ". The organ from the 17th century was purchased in 1732 with funds from the Sebalduskirche am Heiligenstein and later changed. The bell was cast in 1494.
