history

At the beginning of the 11th century the parish was founded by the Diocese of Passau and named in a document in 1080. On May 13, 1365, Bishop Albert von Passau handed over the St. Stephen's Church of Hürben (= Hürm) to the Augustinian Canons of St. Pölten as a fief. The final handover took place on October 23, 1382 with papal confirmation from Pope Urban VI. From 1365 to 1784 the parish and the local authority belonged to the Augustinian Canons of St. Pölten.

From the parish Hürm, a mother parish with a large area, the following were demonstrably separated:

  • 11th century: Parish church Kilb (1080) with vicariate Bischofstetten,
  • 12th century: Parish of St. Margarethen and Parish of Loosdorf
  • 13th century: Vicariate Kirnberg, Vicariate Mank (1323), Vicariate St. Gotthard and Vicariate Haunoldstein

In the middle of the 15th century, a respected theologian who came from Hürm or Diendorf (place of birth) lived and worked in Vienna. His name was Christanus de Hurben (= Christian Tiendorfer from Hürm; Canon St. Stephan ; Dr. theol .; Uni. Vienna from 1420, † 1467) but was mostly only called “Master Christian von Hurben”. In 1443 he became rector, 1451 vice-chancellor of the University of Vienna and 1450 cathedral dean St. Stephan in Vienna.

The early decades of the 16th century were marked by the devastation of the Turkish Wars . In 1529 the church was destroyed and consecrated on May 15, 1548 with two altars.

In 1783, by decree of Emperor Josef II, re-parishes were made. On July 16, 1784 the canon monastery of St. Pölten was closed and abolished.

architecture

Church exterior

The church, which is Gothic in essence - was regotified as a hall church from 1894 to 1905 - has a Gothic choir, a northern choir side tower and a southern choir side chapel from the 14th century. Due to the revision and renewal of the window frames and portals before 1905 and the plastering from 1991/1992, the church appears uniform. The nave under a hipped roof has buttresses, pointed arch windows and portals in late Gothic shapes. The retracted choir with a five- eighth closing has a baroque weathercock on the ridge. The south-facing chapel extension with a polygonal end has a pent roof. On the north side there are one and two-story extensions under monopitch roofs. In the northern corner of the choir there is a slender three-story tower with clock gables and a high pointed helmet. On the west wall is a lunette of a late Renaissance epitaph with a relief of the Resurrection of Christ from the end of the 16th century.
